I'd characterize NASA's explanation as somewhere between rather thin and downright flaky, Nyx! purr (doesn't Mars' temperature extremes and superstorms for b-b-billions of years militate against thin wafers of rock remaining intact still? Rather than having turned to dust long ago....)

Some years back my self and a group from YUFOS investigated a sighting report at Ilkley. West Yorks. We went to the exact spot the witness was standing on the same day, the same time, one year after the event and proved beyond all reasonable doubt that it was actually just the Sun reflecting on a damp rock.
And we took pictures to prove it.
We can't do this 'gumshoe' investigation on Mars yet.
