Kind of old news (2015?) and a bit of an over exaggeration I think. Look closely at the numbers and the actual risk. Eating it in moderation is no way near as bad as smoking. From World Health Org FAQ: 9. Processed meat was classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). Tobacco smoking and asbestos are also both classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). Does it mean that consumption of processed meat is as carcinogenic as tobacco smoking and asbestos?
No, processed meat has been classified in the same category as causes of cancer such as tobacco smoking and asbestos (IARC Group 1, carcinogenic to humans), but this does NOT mean that they are all equally dangerous. The IARC classifications describe the strength of the scientific evidence about an agent being a cause of cancer, rather than assessing the level of risk.So enjoy that "very occasional" slab of bacon. Love these stories - when I click on the comprehensive study link in the main story it takes me to the Guardian. Silly me expecting to see the actual study.

Ghost,
I am happy you gave me permission to eat my occasional bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich smeared with mayonnaise on white bread cut in triangles covered up with a bunch of potato chips.

As long as your sandwich is being cut into triangles you are safe. (y)

Ghost, I am happy you gave me permission to eat my occasional bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich smeared with mayonnaise on white bread cut in triangles covered up with a bunch of potato chips. Amen! .....Nyx I spent most of my young formative years in the United Kingdom so a deep love of burned breakfast toast(=carcinogenic risk), the fry up(=every risk imaginable) and for speed and convenience assorted versions of fried morning eggs( assured calory & salt overload) has been imprinted on my simple mind ! I would be devastated if bacon went off the menu! Seriously, we have been getting the same (ambiguously worded, not to upset the meat producers) signals from the European Union, and processed meats like bacon if consumed in copious amounts do seem to harm our health over time, especially targeting intestines and the heart. So like Ed says. Enjoy, but don't overdo it. purr

As long as your sandwich is being cut into triangles you are safe. (y) Greetings! For starter we will have breakfast with some eggs, some slices of backside from your greatest leader, toast, tomatoes and lettuce, maybe a little mayonaise whatever, all prepared according to your custom, so we may discuss your terms of surrender and further ahh... processing. [translated from an original transmission.] GhostofEd, I believe in killing breakfast in one diagonal cut. We're safe only until Earth is visited by intelligent pigs. (Payback time... . "..Oiink..." [received voice transmission]) purr

.. on white bread cut in triangles ..
Rumored to only be safe if the triangles are precisely equilateral.
A standard right angle triangle could shorten your life by as much as 200 milliseconds; Is it really worth the risk ?
Cutting your toast into isosceles triangles will get you forcibly evicted from any English pub.

p.s. I have cereal for breakfast. I could never get the angles quite right.
