And she was such a promising student; So sad. HAL I don't know HAL, have you watched video's of Octopuses? They are really intelligent.... carrying shells around with them to hide under to protect themselves from predators.... www.scientificamerican.com/article/are-octopuses-smart/Who knows what is out there on other planets, different forms of life we have no idea about..... there has always been lots of speculation..... and that is all we can really do until we go there and find out what is really there.

Yes the 50 50 odds Hal....maybe yes maybe not..but perhaps this new addition to extremophiles tilts the odds in favor of life
‘Flammable ice’ discovery offers ‘tantalizing clue’ to potential ALIEN life – study the microhabitat that grew the life has been dubbed the 'Death Star' by researchers. © University of Aberdeen Researchers have discovered the existence of life encased in tiny bubbles within sheets of ‘flammable ice’ in a potential breakthrough that could reveal how aliens exist on other planets. Flammable ice occurs when ice traps methane in its molecular structure. An international team of researchers studying the phenomenon in the Sea of Japan made the startling discovery of life within the microscopic bubbles. The discovery, which could have major implications for the likelihood of alien life elsewhere in the universe, was fortuitously made by a team investigating whether flammable ice is an energy source that emits less carbon than other fuels. Despite incredibly harsh conditions, the microhabitats are grown by microbes within tiny bubbles of oil and water found in sheets of frozen gas and ice. “In combination with the other evidence collected by my colleagues, my results showed that even under near-freezing temperatures, at extremely high pressures, with only heavy oil and saltwater for food-sources, life was flourishing and leaving its mark,” researcher Stephen Bowden, from the University of Aberdeen, said in a statement.“It certainly gives a positive spin to cold dark places, and opens up a tantalizing clue as to the existence of life on other planets,” Bowden added. So it turns out that all the freezing planets at the edge of every planetary system could host life with just ice and a little heat. The findings were published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Odd that we don't seem able to go visit the Moon again. So the others on the list are way in the future; if ever.
By the way, your views on Betelgeuse ?

I was wondering about extremophiles especially with some of the stuff left behind and carried aboard the spacecrafts (despite decontamination). I was reading that (Betelgeuse) this morning on Spaceweather. It will be interesting to see what happens on and after the 21st.

Hi Luvey,
The following is an excerpt from your "Daily Mail" cited article: Until we can set Human eyeballs on Europa, anything is possible. I would like to know the logic of how the Dr. Grady derived her speculation. Scientist types don't generally posit wild-assed conjecture without having followed some reasonable trail of clues.
Years ago, I was a posting member of a 'JPLesq' reflector list which was named "Dive Europa". A few of the members were SETI-I (SETI Institute) members and others were JPL planetary scientists.
The general consensus at that time concerning Europa, although perceptions may have changed, was that due to the proximity to Jupiter's intense magnetic field trapping the suns energy, causing an immense ionizing radiation (gamma ray) environment, has turned the Europa's liquid ocean into frozen-slushy sulpheric acid. There was some speculation on how to design autnomous diving robots to explore Europa. But those planetary scientists were not in the independent research funding loop, which incidentally JPL wasn't managed by NASA. So there was not much traction in that regard. However, I did point out to others at the time that other investigators have found life in some of the most extreme environments findable on Earth, such as around the undersea volcanic thermal vents and also, in the coldest areas of the arctic oceans. It is my opinion, that there are likely uncountable currently non-realizable ...recognizable?...predictable forms of life in the cosmos, but we just haven't had opportunity to find their examples as we are still planet bound.

Myself having worked for several large defense contractors through the years, several of which manufacture military RADAR systems, I was a bit surprised to learn of a RADAR that I have not ever heard discussed anywhere in the US Defense Systems meetings.
Rezonans-N RADARs? What are those? Who makes them? Where are the systems deployed? How do they work? What is the detection mission? And having received an inference that it could be used to detect a way-out-there planet, too far away to be detected optically or too dark (being so "cold") but detectable by RADAR? What is that gadget?
Be sure to read the blah blah blah, as it is a fairly simple description of how general RADAR works with regards the difference between short wave 'beam' RADAR and long wave radio 'non-beam' type RADAR systems. And its all Russian too. How interesting is that?
Heh heh heh talk about market stretching, take a gander at those RADAR antennas! Just how "mobile" do those look to ya? Heh heh. Marketers are a bit like lawyers even in Russia! I wonder just how much time it takes to set-up one of those mobile antennas? Gotta tip the hat to those Russians, those antennas are...well...just look at'm! Be sure to scroll all the way down to see the antennas...
Rezonans-N:
Rosoboronexport Official Website:
WikiPedia Description of Rosoboronexport
And then attempting to understand where the following information originated and in which context, I found:
Russia to deploy two high frequency RADARs in Arctic ‘to counter hypersonic missile threats’
Excerpts from above follow:
The last paragraph technically presents several significant errors. The faster the sensing, the greater the required bandwith becomes. Its a bit like trying to sample hi-fidelity music with a slow recording sampling speed, on playback, it sounds like shit, (below the Nyquist sample limit) because a lot of the details are missed.
The primary purpose of Rezonans RADARs is low frequency RF transmission, it is a very slow, low bandwidth RADAR, in fact its pulse emissions are between 5 ~ 10 per second depending on range 'reach'. So the question becomes, how much movement would be missed between pulse epochs if the target vehicle were moving 15,300 MPH (22,440 feet/second) or 24622.96 KM/Hr (6839.712 meters/second)?
However, it seems likely, due to the low frequency emission, that the RADAR could be over-the-horizon capable due to ionospheric skip. But I have not seen anything anywhere that supports that notion.
However the beam resolution at any significant distance, 600km, would become highly distorted owing to such things as the ionospheric instability, and beam spreading due to atmospheric constituants over the media path. Add to that the fact that the antennas are not steerable beyond about 10°, (likely only because, it is stated, but unverified, to be phased arrays, and generally phased arrays can accomplish minor 'beam' steering). In any case is a low resolution RADAR at best. A look-see at the antennas reveal that many of the configurations are mainly arrays of Yagis. And are elevated a 100ft/30m or so, to enable a further look.
Then there is the matter that, it is Russian RADAR, and they don't share any technical information about anything just as the US Military does not share tactical technical information in the public view.
And I'm not quite sure how it is all supposed to fit together, as far as I can determine, each item are a seperate and unrelated to each other news item, which somehow, were integrated as being of one related theme?
The Russian Defense Systems' Rezonans RADARs are specifically implemented to detect US Military stealth aircraft by employing low frequency resonance or Raleigh scattering RADAR technology...old technology to thwart the high frequency RADAR 'invisibility' of US Military 'stealth' aircraft technology.
I found it all fascinating and interesting reading, but I'm unsure as to why it was all bunched together. The planet detection was not accomplished by the Russian Defense Rezonans RADAR, but by a NASA Infrared Sensing space vehicle, while the RADARs being implemented in the Arctic are likely being deployed there to prevent the US from striking Russia in a 'first-strike' sneak attack using stealth bombers.
Russian anti-stealth short range defense RADAR linked to Planetary Defense Coordination Office managed by NASA?
That's why its called the wild InterNet!
But it was fun and interesting tracking down all the peices and it was informative too.
Thanks for sharing.

HAL. @ HAL We allegedly lost the plans to all the old machinery that made the machinery. But in this age of 3d printing where you can print a heart valve or a gun....I find that hard to swallow..
@ Plutronius why yes..it's called humour..the punchline was at the end..I'm glad you were able to separate independent subjects..its a good skill and necessary when you need to extract insertions placed for different motives in public without drawing attention..even complete works of fiction.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yevgeny_ZamyatinParty of the Soviet Union (CPSU) following the October Revolution. In 1921, We became the first work banned by the Soviet censorship board. Ultimately, Zamyatin arranged for We to be smuggled to the West for publication. The subsequent outrage this sparked within the Party and the Union of Soviet Writers led directly to Zamyatin's successful request for exile from his homeland. Due to his use of literature to criticize Soviet society, Zamyatin has been referred to as one of the first Soviet dissidents all the way to the movie 3 days of the Condor where spy messaging was done via published books.((They)) have quite the publishing business too.Like the character played by Robert redford.. I Read Everything..too and enjoy other people who do as well. Platforms like UCB are like a waterhole..brings all types of life forms together that you would normally not see together....don't ya think?

Hello plutronus I like the way you think.... very open minded. You make a good point on why would this scientist risk their career making such a statement. There must be more too it. Not long ago they found a fungi that eats radiation growing inside of the Chernobyl reactors.... It seems that life can find a way even in the harshest environments, so why not life out there on other planets? I remember reading about the life found around volcanic thermal vents and the arctic oceans... truly amazing. Pen
