My wife and I wear masks when we shop.
I feel people think this against America or we must be a Democrat.
We live outside of Nashville, a high coronavirus area having lots of problems.
I don’t understand how the mask is now a political symbol?
It is a medical thing!

Wrong !
Not being anti -American here, but it is a typical American 'we are invincible, we have RIGHTS. no government authority is going to make us wear the mask as we have a choice. If thousands are dying, then it must be from something else. Or maybe God ordained it.'
You see, nyx. You have two things working against each other. You have the Constitution (and how old is that now?) that supports the right to assembly. And you have on the ground reality that shows that crowds produce the spread of viri.
Which one is going to win ?
Common sense doesn't stand a chance. 'Aint no government man going to tell me what to do' Excuse the cough, picked it up a few days a go while protesting in (Pick your city of choice), can't seem to shake it.
That's really all there is to it.
You are, colleagues and friends across the pond, are in deep shit while this attitude holds sway.
Best of luck to you all. Stay safe. Wear the goddam mask.

Thanks HAL, With WHO predicting 350, 000 American deaths by year’s end, my wife and I will continue to wear our masks.
We might be done with coronavirus, but coronavirus is not done with us!

Nyx,
Just spent the last hour watching VP Pence give the health talk.
When the speakers had finished, he asked for questions.
And one of the first was 'how can you justify holding election rallies while at the same time promoting social distancing and wearing masks'.
His response was entirely predictable.
Americans have constitutional right of assembly. and we do not give up out constitutional rights.
So, my friend, you are stuffed. And Pence and co do not give a rat's arse if you contract the virus as long as you turn up at rallies and shout and cheer for the re-election of Trump.
He has spelt it out so clearly that surely no one can be in doubt now.
Keep safe, keep wearing mask when you do have to go out. Avoid crowds. All the best.
HAL.
And Pence, it will be noted, was the only person on the dais not wearing a mask.

Thanks HAL,
Under a different thread , many people are not happy with Trump’s huge 4th of July fireworks party at Mt.Rushmore in the Black Hills, particularly the fire department anxious about forest fires from the fireworks.

In the end it is all down to the individual.
One may have the right to gather in a potentially dangerous crowd. But that doesn't mean you have to go and do it.

4th July is also the day we get to go to cafes again. Means I can get a decent espresso.
Plus a lifting of some other restrictions.

Yes, Americans have a constitutional right to congregate, but Americans also have a constitutional obligation NOT to endanger one another. Someone needs to remind our politicians and our general population that masks and social distancing not only protect them from others but it protects others from them.
