I agree very strange.
I do not think someone used spray paint.
That would be a small fortune in spray paint, and the article claims the grass grows at an accelerated rate.
What would make grass grow fast in the autumn?

My theory. The crops that were crushed to make the original were injured. These stunted plants, still driven to produce seed, then tried to regrow the seeded part of the plant which wasn't tall enough to be damaged by the harvester as it passed by. The luck of the timing both of the circle makers and the harvester.
