In the beginning at UFO Casebook there were interesting times.
I love this thread, EmbassyKat! And note from your memories of 'beginning' I came into the UFO Casebook main site and forums a little later, I believe throughout as the forever purring one really enthusiastic about B J's humongous compilation of cases (without realizing then how hard he & friends worked to create!) and feeling increasingly at home in our forum community.
I remember Lev as a great and terrible dragon ruling the cybersky and being relatively new to the internet at first I didn't know what to make of him or his Collective. I had several friendly and interesting exchanges with his character, while noticing how flaming storms invariably raged around him, my neighborly self and outraged to apoplectic flamers alike drawn into his elaborate traps: this was a Great Game he was the virtual master of. I heard of some members who 'hated' him, and always thought that was flawed strategy. Similarly to the real world you simply have got to 'look' at people until you get a sense, not allowing oneself to be trapped into enemy-think. Sense: over time (many years) I began to think that the extraordinary gentleman (or league of gentlemen) generating the Lev character expressed two basic personae, a disturbed and anguished one and a brilliant ruthless ('psychopathic') other. L E V I A T H A N's ruthless act got him the enemies of course, folks who reacted 100% allergic (actually ceding control to him without realizing!) to his mere presence. The sum of his antics did drive debate participants and mods crazy... I remember him always.. always popping back in after getting banned (done mostly for good reason). Now allowing myself to sink back into my memories of endless lev drama (including some wonderful and insightful exchanges too!) I can only conclude with feeling deep emphathy. What an act! We've all been had ! Maybe nobody insulted me better... But I do not ever sympathize, I believe that would be an insult not befitting one who so masterfully posted T H E M S E L V E S into UNKNOWN category.
Lev wherever you are out there, God Bless...
So, EmbassyKat, I think you will agree with me those early times on our beloved site were in many ways interesting times. The members as I experienced this 'first contact' were awesome (still are by the way) and by now I suspect that this was caused by many of us entering a little better resourced than we were prepared to admit. Maybe I just imagine it all.
