This is the full 1938 "War of the Worlds" broadcast from the Mercury Theatre starring Orson Welles. This broadcast threw a tremendous scare into Americans on broadcast night and many people took off into the streets screaming that martians were coming and people shot at water towers and telephone poles thinking they were martian machines making their way across the countryside. The reason this happened was that, in those days, radio was a lifeline for many people to the outside world. They depended on radio to give it to them straight and keep them informed and updated. What the Mercury Theatre broadcast did was disguise itself as an ordinary, innocuous broadcast that is interrupted by a breaking newsflash stating that explosions were noticed on the surface of Mars. Then the regular broadcast continues until more breaking news keeps interrupting and the invasion becomes clearer and clearer to the listener.
In those days, radio gave you news or it gave you entertainment. This broadcast give entertainment disguised as news that sounded official and seemed on-the-level. Nothing like this had ever been done and no one knew what to make of it other than those who knew it was just a radio play. Those who did not also failed to recognize the very distinctive voice of Orson Welles. While many thought the martians were attacking, a great many who were fooled did not think it was martians but the Germans and/or the Japanese. We were on the brink of war with both nations and most Americans knew it was inevitable and were living on a hair-trigger. One woman later stated that she thought the crashed craft was of Japanese origin and manufacture "because they're so clever." The last few minutes of the broadcast before it turns into a narrative with Welles doing the narrating is truly frightening! I can understand how this had to blow people's minds! So why did they panic after hearing Welles start doing a narrative? Because they didn't stick around to hear that part. Once the on-the-scene broadcast ends so shockingly, they assumed the worst had arrived and it was time to get out of there. But to go where? Didn't matter--just go! As Bertrand Russell once said, we can't expect people to act humanely nor sanely under the pressure of a great fear.
