Sly fox steals 100 shoes in Berlin, and he's not the first
By Mindy Weisberger
"Why did the fox steal my shoes?" sounds like the start of a brain-teasing riddle or an annoyingly viral song. But for people in Berlin, it was an existential question spurred by the knowledge that a local fox was the culprit behind a string of shoe thefts.
About two weeks ago, Christian Meyer, a resident of Berlin's Zehlendorf neighborhood, noticed that one of his new and expensive running shoes had disappeared from his porch, and he decided to investigate the theft, German news site Tagesspiegel reported.
Meyer quickly learned that he was not the thief's only victim, and a tip helped him catch the fox bandit red-handed (or red-pawed) with two blue flip-flops in its mouth, according to Tagesspiegel. Days later, Meyer spotted the fox again; he followed it into a thicket, where Meyer crawled around for close to an hour. There, he discovered the fox's secret stash of more than 100 shoes, "most of them just gnawed on a little," Tagesspiegel reported.
Meyer captured a photo of the thieving fox and its ill-gotten stash, which Tagesspiegel editor Felix Hackenbruch shared on Twitter on July 26. The shoe pile contained sneakers, clogs, sandals and slippers in a range of colors, shapes and sizes, though the most numerous shoes by far were Crocs.
Still unknown: Why the fox stole the shoes, and why this particular canid had a thing for Crocs. But this isn't the first time that an urban fox has demonstrated a seeming shoe fetish. In August 2019, a fox in Melbourne, Australia, repeatedly visited a woman's porch and stole three boots over the course of a week; the woman captured the thief's antics on security camera footage, which she posted on YouTube.
A pair of foxes in Kyoto, Japan, pilfered more than 40 pairs of sandals in 2018 before the duo was apprehended in a stakeout involving five police officers, The Guardian reported that year. In 2009, in the small town of Foehren in western Germany, a female fox stole about 110 to 120 shoes in just one night, presumably "for her cubs to play with," according to Reuters. In 2013, a writer described waking up one morning in his London home to find that a fox had placed seven shoes in the middle of his lawn, "ranging in size from that of a toddler to an adult trainer."

US officials investigate UFO sighting after mysterious object sparks panicked phone calls
US OFFICIALS launched an investigation into a UFO following a flurry of calls concerning a mysterious, almost-transparent object in the skies above Denver, Colorado this week.
By OLI SMITH PUBLISHED: 00:25, Mon, Aug 10, 2020
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigated reports of a mysterious UFO in the skies above one of the biggest US cities this week. Videos of the mysterious UFO were posted online, prompting the local CBS channel to question the origin of the object. Emmy award-winning journalist for CBS Denver Kelly Werthmann tweeted out a video of the UFO and requested help in identifying it, setting off a wave of conspiracy theories.
The video she tweeted out was captured by CBS 4 photojournalist Jeremiah Bellile, who noticed the object in question on Monday.
Werthmann noted that the TV station newsroom had received "quite a few calls" from panicked locals.
She tweeted: "Do you know what this is? Several people called the CBS Denver newsroom wondering if its a strange light or UFO.
"Jeremiah Bellile captured this view from the CBS4 rooftop.
"FAA says they 'have no reports of anything unusual' East of Denver."
However, the mystery was soon resolved when a former NASA official Joseph Gruber waded in.
He responded to Werthmann on social media, saying it seemed to be one of "Google's high altitude balloons," otherwise known as Project Loon.
Gruber posted flight radar photos showing that there were three such balloons in the sky over Denver that day.
He added: "They've been testing for a while in the central plains. Also down in South America and Africa."

The Chupacabra is Getting Its Own Netflix Movie
Paul Seaburn August 11, 2020
If I can make it there
I’m gonna make it anywhere
It’s up to you, Netflix
Netflix
With apologies to composer John Kander, lyricist Fred Ebb and singers Liza Minnelli and the late Frank Sinatra, if their iconic song, “Theme from New York, New York,” were recorded today, Netflix would be the place where careers are made – on the streaming service that never lets anyone sleep. Which means that the Chupacabra is about to make it … it was announced this week that Chris Columbus is producing a new film for Netflix and 26th Street Pictures based on an encounter with a Chupacabra. Bloody horror flick, terrifying monster movie or something else?
“The film follows a teenager, who while visiting his family in Mexico, gains an unlikely companion when he discovers a young chupacabra hiding in his grandpa’s shed. In order to save the mythical creature, Alex and his cousins must embark on the adventure of a lifetime.”
Uh-oh. According to that description in Deadline, it sounds like a ‘something else’ – a family movie. The yet-unnamed film will be directed and rewritten (based on the original script by Marcus Rinehart, Sean Kennedy Moore and Joe Barnathan) by Jonas Cuarón – you may remember him as the co-writer (with his father Alfonso Cuarón) of “Gravity.” Columbus, of course, is the director of the “Home Alone” movies, “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Lost in Babysitting” and three Harry Potter movies. The first three may explain why this Chupacabra movie will be geared towards family viewing, although one would hope it brings in some of the fright factor and scary villains like the Harry Potter franchise.

A Broken Cable Has Wrecked One of Earth's Largest Radio Telescopes The cable tore a 100-foot hole in the gargantuan dish in Puerto Rico, which was featured in Carl Sagan's novel 'Contact' and the James Bond film 'GoldenEye.'

The Arecibo Observatory, one of the largest single-aperture radio telescopes in the world, has suffered extensive damage after an auxiliary cable snapped and crashed through the telescope’s reflector dish.
The accident left a 100-foot hole in the observatory, which stretches 1,000 feet over a karst sinkhole in northern Puerto Rico. The cable broke at about 2:45 AM local time on Monday, but the cause of the failure remains unknown, according to the University of Central Florida, one of three institutions that operates Arecibo.
“We have a team of experts assessing the situation,” said Francisco Cordova, Arecibo’s director, in the UCF statement. “Our focus is assuring the safety of our staff, protecting the facilities and equipment, and restoring the facility to full operations as soon as possible, so it can continue to assist scientists around the world.”
Arecibo was the largest single-dish radio telescope in the world for decades, but it was bumped into second place in 2016 by the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) in China. Some radio observatories, such as the Very Large Array in Chile, consist of vast networks of antennas that take up far more space than Arecibo or FAST, but the latter telescopes are the largest facilities in the world that collect light in a single big dish.
Arecibo also suffered damage during Hurricane Maria in 2017, though it was nowhere near as debilitating as the wreckage caused by the broken cable.
In addition to halting scientific observations at the telescope, the accident is sad news for anyone inspired by Arecibo’s status as a cultural icon and its pioneering role in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).
The observatory was written into the plot of Carl Sagan’s bestselling novel Contact, as well as its 1997 film adaptation. It has also served as the backdrop in the James Bond film GoldenEye, the X-Files episode “Little Green Men,” and the multiplayer map for the game Battlefield 4, among its many other popular depictions.
Arecibo is also a popular tourist destination in Puerto Rico that attracts nearly 100,000 visitors each year, according to its visitor center.

Creepiest UFO & alien sighting in Australia
Laura Masia 7 August 2020
If you've ever wondered if there's life out there in the universe, you need to read about these bizarre encounters.
They are out of this world!
Up up and away
The weather was mild and calm as banana farmer George Pedley drove his tractor by a sugar cane farm in Tully, Queensland, in January 1966.
Suddenly, he felt the ground beneath him vibrate. Worried that his tyre was losing air, he glanced down at the tractor, but then something else caught his attention.
A silver saucer-shaped object rose out of a lagoon towards the treetops. Then, it tilted on its side before speeding away into the horizon.
Curious, George, 28, went to the lagoon for a closer look and saw a large indentation in the reeds, which had been uprooted and swirled into a floating mat.
The case quickly became a media phenomenon.
"Had anyone asked me five days ago if I believed in flying saucers I'd have laughed and thought they were nuts. But now I know better," George said at the time.
Since then, many reports of extraterrestrial activity coming from the Tully area have been noted and it's considered to be one of the nation's most popular areas for UFO sightings.
Schoolyard sighting
As the bell rang for recess, students at Westall High School in Melbourne spilled out into the yard.
But quickly, the regular Wednesday in 1966 became one the kids and teachers would remember for years.
As they looked up at the sky, three round silver aircrafts caught their attention as they hovered above the school.
More than 300 witnesses watched, fascinated as one of the saucers began to descend into the bushland area behind the school.

5 Places In India Where UFO Sightings Have Been Reported By Locals & Officials Over The Years
Aditya Pandey Updated: Aug 12, 2020, 11:42 IST
With time more and more reports of incidents related to Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO) have been making their way on the internet. A glow of light just floating through the air, uncommon shapes gliding above the ground and ‘alien vehicles’ flying in a definite pattern at night.
Just earlier this year, the US Military officially published three authentic UFO videos. India, on the other hand, has had its share of sightings of the extraterrestrial, reportedly.
Here are five places across India where UFO sightings have been reported:
Lagan Kher - Ladakh Kashmir
On August 4, 2013, several officials of the Indian Army reportedly agreed to have seen a UFO in the Ladakh sector along the Line of Actual Control with China. According to the locals, over 100 sightings were reported at the time. This wasn’t the first time Indian soldiers came forward with something like that.
In 2012, an ITBP unit based in Thakung, close to the Pangong Tso Lake also revealed that they had seen “two yellowish spheres” rise from the horizon on the Chinese side, hover in the sky for a couple of hours and then eventually disappear.
PM’s Residence - Delhi
On June 14, 2018, Hindustan Times reported that multiple individuals at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi saw a round UFO hovering above the estate. A quick but thorough search was done and the Delhi Air Traffic Control was also put on high alert. Once nothing threatening was found, the search was finally called off.
Special commissioner of police and Delhi police chief spokesperson Dependra Pathak confirmed these sightings but refused to give out details “keeping security reasons in mind”.
Pune - Maharashtra
According to a 2014 Pune Mirror article (https://punemirror.indiatimes.com/pune/others/its-a-ufo/articleshow/44227269.cms), Jet Airways pilot Mahima Chaudhary was mid-flight when she called the Mumbai Air Traffic Control to report seeing a mysterious green and white object hovering over 26,300 feet in the sky near Pune around 12:45 PM. However, Mumbai ATC denied having any information on this.
Lucknow - Uttar Pradesh
In 2014, Amit Tripathi, a Lucknow resident was sitting in his balcony trying to capture the beautiful sunset with his phone’s camera when he spotted a shiny object in the sky right next to the sun. According to India Today, Amit saw the object suddenly spinning and rising before it went straight up in the sky and disappeared within 40 seconds.
He did manage to click a photo of the object though.

Kannur - Kerala
Divya Sebastian, wife of Major Sebastian Zachariah, an Army officer told The New Indian Express that her husband had accidentally caught the image of a UFO while checking out the features of the phone that he had bought recently. They even went to the phone company’s customer service centre just to check whether the phone’s camera had malfunctioned and captured something faulty but nothing of that sort was found.
When Professor Jayant Murthy, of Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bangalore was informed of this incident, he simply rejected the theory and said that it could have been an illusion as “these are nothing real.”
