Researchers develop an optical fiber made of gel derived from marine algae
by José Tadeu Arantes, FAPESP 27 July 2020
An optical fiber made of agar has been produced at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. This device is edible, biocompatible and biodegradable. It can be used in vivo for body structure imaging, localized light delivery in phototherapy or optogenetics (e.g., stimulating neurons with light to study neural circuits in a living brain), and localized drug delivery.
Another possible application is the detection of microorganisms in specific organs, in which case the probe would be completely absorbed by the body after performing its function.
The research project, which was supported by São Paulo Research Foundation—FAPESP, was led by Eric Fujiwara, a professor in UNICAMP's School of Mechanical Engineering, and Cristiano Cordeiro, a professor in UNICAMP's Gleb Wataghin Institute of Physics, in collaboration with Hiromasa Oku, a professor at Gunma University in Japan.
An article on the study is published in Scientific Reports.
Agar, also called agar-agar, is a natural gelatin obtained from marine algae. Its composition consists of a mixture of two polysaccharides, agarose and agaropectin. "Our optical fiber is an agar cylinder with an external diameter of 2.5 millimeters [mm] and a regular inner arrangement of six 0.5 mm cylindrical airholes around a solid core. Light is confined owing to the difference between the refraction indices of the agar core and the airholes," Fujiwara told.
"To produce the fiber, we poured food-grade agar into a mold with six internal rods placed lengthwise around the main axis," he continued. "The gel distributes itself to fill the available space. After cooling, the rods are removed to form airholes, and the solidified waveguide is released from the mold. The refraction index and geometry of the fiber can be adapted by varying the composition of the agar solution and mold design, respectively."
The researchers tested the fiber in different media, from air and water to ethanol and acetone, concluding that it is context-sensitive. "The fact that the gel undergoes structural changes in response to variations in temperature, humidity and pH makes the fiber suitable for optical sensing," Fujiwara said.
Another promising application is its simultaneous use as an optical sensor and a growth medium for microorganisms. "In this case, the waveguide can be designed as a disposable sample unit containing the necessary nutrients. The immobilized cells in the device would be optically sensed, and the signal would be analyzed using a camera or spectrometer," he said.

Mysterious Cattle Mutilation Occurs in England
Paul Seaburn
July 27, 2020
When one thinks of cattle mutilations (who thinks of cattle mutilations besides cattle owners in the Midwest and Argentina and conspiracy theorists – asking for a friend), one doesn’t normally expect to hear that they’re happening in England … and to bovines, not sheep. Yet that’s the case in Todmorden, a town in Yorkshire, where a local resident recently discovered a dead calf whose ears, lips and genitals were removed via precise cuts with no signs of blood. Get ready, conspiracy theorists – Todmorden is better known for its UFO sightings and abductions.
“The Calf laying was in a field of Sheep, I am unsure if this is usual practice for farmers, or if the Calf was taken then returned and ‘left’ in the wrong field perhaps. This kill has all the classic signs of animal mutilation. Notice the very precise clean cuts, there are no signs of attack or a chase of any kind. The ground is far to clean for this to be a Dog or Cat kill. It doesn’t fit with the classic signs of any normal beast here in the UK. As I said to me it looks as if the Calf had been dropped from above and deposited in the wrong field. But that is just my opinion and only speculation.”
Fortunately for us, Albert Tyas, the man who found the dead calf, took plenty of pictures and sent them to Deborah Hatswell, a well-known and thorough British paranormal investigator whose normal territory is Bigfoot (she’s the Founding member of the British Bigfoot Research Team) but appears to have broad experiences and many contacts worldwide in the paranormal field. She says the cuts are like nothing like those made by any animal she’s familiar with and the ground shows no tire tracks. In fact, it’s a field normally grazed by sheep. Without the Fungus Among Us ..Colonizing Mars may take forever..At least the One That Grows in Chernobyl and Fukushimainterestingengineering.com/fungi-from-chernobyl-reactor-could-save-astronauts-from-space-radiation?_source=newsletter&_campaign=2b2komJbnzEdo&_uid=oQeZ4GJ2bp&_h=e1928b52c6d241e652868d643e57dbd64329f219&_nt=8o6Q1W&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=mailing&utm_campaign=Newsletter-27-07-2020Fungi from Chernobyl Reactor Could Save Astronauts from Space Radiation Could Chernobyl really be the key to colonization of Mars? Derya Ozdemir By Derya Ozdemir July 27, 2020 Fungi from Chernobyl Reactor Could Save Astronauts from Space Radiation Cryptococcus neoformans fungiDr. Grahan Beards/Wikimedia Commons Once you get people up there to Mars, it becomes obvious very fast that the distance is not the only hindrance, since protecting astronauts from the deadly cosmic rays is a pretty imminent issue. Such ambitious cosmic journeys require smart solutions. And some fungi, it seems. While it may sound like a sci-fi movie scenario, building shields using a radiation-absorbing fungus that grows close to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant might be the idea that scientists have been waiting for so long. It was tested on the ISS The unusual solution has been reported by the John Hopkins University and Stanford scientists after the fungus was able to block some cosmic rays after being tested on the International Space Station. An extremely thin sample of the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans was able to block and absorb 2% of the cosmic rays that hit it while it was onboard the ISS. While that's not enough to protect the astronauts, it should be noted that the sample was only two millimeters thick. Samsung's Galaxy Watch 3 Will Be Controlled by Your Hand Gestures SEE ALSO: NASA IS GOING NUCLEAR ON MARS AND THE MOON Fungus self-replicates and self-heals The fungi were originally found sprouting up the walls of the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear reactor which had been flooded with gamma five years after the disaster. Nils Averesch, Stanford researcher and also co-author of the study, told New Scientist, "What makes the fungus great is that you only need a few grams to start out, It self-replicates and self-heals, so even if there’s a solar flare that damages the radiation shield significantly, it will be able to grow back in a few days." A "sunblock" against toxic rays in drug form Kasthuri Venkateswaran, a research scientist at NASA who led the experiments on the Cryptococcus neoformans fungi, stated that the fungi could be used as a "sunblock" against toxic rays after we've extracted its radiation-absorbing power and manufactured it in drug form. Its benefits wouldn't end there since it would allow cancer patients, airline pilots, and nuclear power plant engineers to continue their lives without the fear of absorbing deadly rays. It could be also weaved into the material of spacesuit fabric. A 21-centimeters thick layer would keep future Mars settlers safeHowever, perhaps the most impressive part of their study is that a layer of the fungus around 21-centimeters thick could "largely negate the annual dose-equivalent of the radiation environment on the surface of Mars." The idea of colonizing Mars seems to become more approachable as days go by, and we can't wait for more steps to be taken. The study was made online last week. Hey Sys,
Yes, from what I understand they start out as kids killing dogs, cats and birds etc. and graduate to people.
With that creepy thought, good morning!

Good morning lovely searchers,

US Space Force hires a horse to boldly go where rockets can't. (The beach)
By Brandon Specktor - Senior Writer 28 June 2020
That's four small steps for horse-kind.
The United States Space Force has a new recruit in their mission to keep planet Earth safe. His name is Ghost, and he likes to go clip-clop on the beach.
Ghost, a 5-year-old mustang, is the newest addition to the Conservation Military Working Horse program, which the Space Force recently inherited from the U.S. Air Force. According to a video tweeted by the Space Force, Ghost just joined a stable of four Military Working Horses at Vandenberg Air Force Base — a 99,600-acre (40,306 hectares) chunk of land on the California coast. (That's roughly 100 times the size of Central Park in New York.)
Let's just get this out of the way: No, Ghost is not going into space. Horses are notoriously bad at operating computers, and NASA has had enough trouble sizing their space suits for bipeds lately. Nor is Ghost being trained for combat, despite his cool military credentials.
So, how does Ghost spend his workdays, if not dreaming of the stars or distant shores? According to Staff Sgt. Michael Terrazas, manager of the Military Working Horse Program and one of Ghost's handlers, Ghost is sort of a quadrupedal conservation cop. Ghost and his equine colleagues help the human members of the Working Horse program traverse the vast hills and beaches of Vandenburg, keeping an eye on the area's many protected species and any intruders that might pose a threat to them.
"We enforce fish and game laws, and the horses help us walk off the beaten path to complete our mission," Terrazas said in a 2019 news release (before the Space Force took ownership of the program). "We have even responded to lost hunters and hurt animals."
According to the Vandenburg website, 15 endangered or threatened species live within the base's borders. When patrolling the base's far corners with motor vehicles proves too difficult, program members turn to the horses. Ghost has a smaller ecological footprint than an ATV, Terrazas said, making the horses crucial to accomplishing environmentally friendly patrols.
Like an astronaut, Ghost is undergoing rigorous training before he can go full-time, currently riding three times a week with a personal trainer. Cleaning up beaches and writing citations for hunters might not be as romantic as exploring the Horsehead nebula, but it's arguably even more important work. Way to go, Ghost! That's four small steps for horse-kind.
