HOW THE INTERNET STARTED, ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE
Please do not Google or check this with Snopes. They will lie to you. Trust me!
In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a healthy young wife by the name of Dorothy. And Dot Com was a comely woman, large of breast, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.
And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?"
And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?"
And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. The sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."
Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent.
To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew to the People (HTTP).
And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. Indeed he did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drum heads and drumsticks.
And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known. He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are."
And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.
Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside.
It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE).
That is how it all began. And that's the truth.

Do psychedelics give access to a universal, mystical experience of reality, or is that just a culture-bound illusion?
by Jules Evans
In case you hadn’t noticed, we’re in the middle of a psychedelic renaissance. Research into the healing potential of psychedelics has re-started at prestigious universities such as Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and Imperial College London, and is making rock stars out of the scientists carrying it out. Their findings are being reported with joy and exultation by mainstream media – on CNN, the BBC, even the Daily Mail. Respectable publishers such as Penguin are behind psychedelics bestsellers such as Michael Pollan’s book How To Change Your Mind (2018), which was reviewed enthusiastically across the political spectrum. Silicon Valley billionaires are putting their blockchain millions into funding psychedelics research, and corporates are preparing for a juicy new market. The counterculture has gone mainstream. Turn on, tune in, sell out.
The renaissance involves the resurrection of many ideas from the first ‘summer of love’ in 1967, in particular, the mystical theory of psychedelics. This idea was introduced by Aldous Huxley in his classic The Doors of Perception (1954). Having studied mystical experiences for more than a decade without really having one, Huxley took mescaline, and felt that he’d finally been let in to the mystics’ club. Other 1960s gurus such as Alan Watts, Ram Dass and Huston Smith were also convinced that psychedelics led to genuine mystical experiences, and would be a catalyst for Western culture’s spiritual awakening.
The mystical theory of psychedelics has five key tenets. The first is that psychedelics lead to a mystical experience of unitive, non-dual consciousness, in which all is one, you are united with It, God, the Tao, Brahman, etc. This experience is timeless, ineffable, joyful and noetic (you know that it is true).
Second, that the psychedelic experience is the same as the experience of mystics, found in all religions. Different religions use different terms for ultimate reality, but all mystics are really having the same non-dual experience. This is the theory of the ‘perennial philosophy’, promoted by Huxley and other perennialists. It’s known in religious studies as the ‘universal core of religious experience’ theory.
Third, that the mystical experience previously occurred mainly to ascetics such as St Teresa of Ávila, and was somewhat rare and unpredictable, therefore scientists dismissed it as ‘ego-regression’, ‘psychosis’ and so forth. But now psychedelics have revealed a predictable and replicable route to mystical experiences, so scientists can study them in the lab. They can measure them using brain-scans, or questionnaires such as the Hood Mysticism Scale, developed by the American psychologist Ralph Hood, which measures to what extent a person’s experience maps onto the ‘universal core’.
Fourth, that this scientific research will create an empirical spirituality or ‘neuro-theology’. It will prove, or at least make more credible, the transcendent insights of the mystics.
And finally, that this will change the world. Humanity will join a new scientific religion of mystical experience, beyond differences of language, nation, culture, religion, class, gender or ethnicity. We will all become liberal environmental progressives. We will all overcome our fear of death. After four centuries of materialism, Western culture will be re-enchanted, but in a predictable, rational and replicable way. Homo sapiens will be upgraded.
These ecstatic ideas are back with a vengeance. The present psychedelic renaissance was started in 2006 by the Johns Hopkins’ psychedelic lab, with a paper called ‘Psilocybin Can Occasion Mystical-Type Experiences Having Substantial and Sustained Personal Meaning and Spiritual Significance’. This paper repeated the claim of Huxley et al that psychedelics (in this case, psilocybin or magic mushrooms) reliably lead to a unitive mystical experience which ‘may be foundational to the world’s ethical and moral systems’. It measured the depth of people’s mystical experiences using the Hood Mysticism Scale. Subsequent Johns Hopkins studies found that the stronger the mystical experience induced by psilocybin, the more people were freed from addiction, depression, even the fear of death.
The millenarian hope bubbling below the cool, detached surface of the psychedelic renaissance is apparent if you read Sacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experience (2015) by William Richards, a psychologist at the Johns Hopkins psychedelic lab. The book climaxes in an epilogue of propositions that include: ‘In case you had any doubts, God (or whatever your favourite noun for ultimate reality may be) is’; ‘Consciousness, whether we like it or not, appears to be indestructible’; and ‘The ultimate nature of matter and mind (if you take the mystics seriously) appears to be an ontological source or force of energy called love.’ It’s not clear if these propositions are scientific findings or ecstatic poetry.

The Truth Is Somewhere in the History Channel's UFO Conspiracy Drama Project Blue Book
by James Whitbrook 18 July 2018
In Project Blue Book, Game of Thrones’ Aiden Gillen plays a skeptical investigator of all things alien. But as this first trailer for the Hstory Channel’s new drama series shows, it turns out that deep down, he wants to believe.
This morning Entertainment Weekly debuted the first full look at Project Blue Book, produced by Back to the Future’s Robert Zemeckis. Loosely inspired by declassified documents from the U.S. government, the ‘50s-set drama stars Gillen as J. Allen Hynek, an astronomer recruited by the U.S. Air Force to investigate sightings of extraterrestrial life all over America. Although Hynek and his assigned partner Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey) start out skeptical and want to confirm that little green men from space aren’t real, the duo quickly find that their employers are hiding something big from both them and the American people at large.
Oh, and there’s totally a little green man from space in a tube at the end. Twist!
That said, showrunner Sean Jablonski warned EW despite the presence of a literal alien in a tank, Project Blue Book will lean more towards its conspiracy thriller side rather than the ‘50s retro scifi of UFOs and aliens hidden among us:
This is not a little green men show. This is more of a government conspiracy show with a great sci-fi twist — and also a character piece. Everything we see is and is not what it is. We’re not gonna take the position, certainly not early on, that little green men are running around and it’s just a question of finding them. The creature that you see in that tank is to them what they think it is, and yet it’s not.
Shame, really. A period X-Files sort of thing could be really neat—but even if Project Blue Book focuses on conspiracies instead of straight-up aliens, so far it’s looking pretty interesting. The series is set to launch on the History Channel this winter, but we’ll presumably learn more at its Comic-Con panel this Saturday, July 21. io9.gizmodo.com/the-truth-is-somewhere-in-the-history-channels-ufo-cons-1827685901

Here's How NASA's Solar Probe Is Going to Touch The Sun Without Melting
Absolutely epic!
MICHELLE STARR 20 JUL 2018
In just a few weeks, NASA is due to launch one of its most ambitious projects yet. The Parker Solar Probe is going to swoop in and 'touch' the Sun - coming in closer to the solar surface than any probe has ever done before.
Parker's three closest orbits will bring it within 6.1 million kilometres (3.8 million miles) of the Sun's surface and inside its outer atmosphere, or corona, where temperatures reach millions of degrees Kelvin.
It does have heat shielding, and it's actually pretty wicked, but we'll get into that later. Because first, we have to address those searing temperatures.
It seems like even the fanciest heat shielding would melt under those conditions - after all, surface temperatures of around 733 Kelvin (460 degrees Celsius and 860 Fahrenheit) on Venus contributed to some pretty rapid electronics failures in the probes Russia sent in the 1980s.
As NASA has explained, the trick to protecting Parker lies in the difference between temperature and heat, along with the density of space.
Temperature is a measurement of how fast particles are moving, but heat measures how much energy they actually transfer. In space, you can have particles moving very fast, but not transferring a lot of heat, because there's a lot of space between those particles.
"The corona through which Parker Solar Probe flies, for example, has an extremely high temperature but very low density," NASA's Susannah Darling explained.
"Think of the difference between putting your hand in a hot oven versus putting it in a pot of boiling water (don't try this at home!) - in the oven, your hand can withstand significantly hotter temperatures for longer than in the water where it has to interact with many more particles.
"Similarly, compared to the visible surface of the Sun, the corona is less dense, so the spacecraft interacts with fewer hot particles and doesn't receive as much heat."
That means the heat shield, which protects most of the instruments on board the probe, will only be heated to about 1,644 degrees Kelvin (1,370 C° or 2,500 F°).
It's fantastic technology, really. It's made of two superheated carbon-carbon composite boards, which sandwich a 11.5-centimetre (4.5-inch) carbon-foam core.
The Sun-facing side is painted brilliant white in ceramic paint to deflect as much of the Sun's light as possible; it's about 2.4 metres (8 feet) in diameter. The shield weighs just 72.5 kilograms (160 pounds) because of the lightness of the foam.
And, amazingly, it keeps everything behind it at or below 300 Kelvin (30 C° or 85 F°).
Instrumentation that needs to be able to work outside the safety of the heatshield is protected by its materials. The probe's Faraday cup, to catch charged particles in order to measure their flow, is made of titanium-zirconium-molybdenum, which has a melting point of about 2,622 Kelvin.
The chips that produce the electric field for the instrument are forged from tungsten, the metal with the highest known melting point - 3,695 Kelvin.
And the electrical wiring is made out of niobium, which has a melting point of 2,750 Kelvin. Sensors on the spacecraft's body will help it correct its orientation so that the delicate instrumentation does not become exposed to the Sun's scorching rays.
As for the solar panels, which are used to collect solar energy to power the probe, they can retract behind the heat shield to prevent overheating when Parker gets too close to the Sun.
The whole probe is cooled by pressurised deionised water, the liquid best able to handle the temperature extremes to which Parker will be exposed.
You have to admit, that is a lot of ingenious engineering. We can't wait to see what Parker helps us find out about the Sun, its crazy wind and its even crazier outer atmosphere.

When a U.S. Fighter Pilot Got into a Dogfight with a UFO
by Colin Bertram 19 July 2018
In the words of Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, the man who investigated unidentified-flying-object reports for the U.S. Air Force in the early 1950s, the Gorman Dogfight remains one of the “classics” among UFO sightings.
The incident, which still lacks an airtight explanation, involved a 27-minute air encounter between a veteran World War II fighter pilot named George F. Gorman and a mysterious white orb at high altitude above Fargo, North Dakota. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Gorman told a local newspaper following the October 1, 1948 event. “If anyone else had reported such a thing I would have thought they were crazy.”
Captain Ruppelt operated Project Blue Book, which continued the work of Project Sign and Project Grudge, a series of hush-hush studies conducted by the U.S. Air Force between 1947 and 1969. His mission: to determine if UFOs were a threat to national security and to scientifically analyze UFO-related data.
What makes the Gorman Dogfight unique in the now-declassified pages of Project Blue Book is not only the length of the encounter, but that it was recorded both on the ground and in the sky by numerous reputable sources.
