Herculaneum papyri reveal Plato's burial place
Result of research by University of Pisa expert Ranocchia
The Herculaneum papyri have revealed the location of Plato's burial place in the Platonic Academy in Athens, an Italian researcher said on Tuesday.
The Herculaneum papyri are more than 1,800 papyrus scrolls discovered in the 18th century in the Villa of the Papyri in the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, which were carbonized when the villa was hit by the 79 AD Mount Vesuvius eruption that also destroyed Pompeii.
Reading the scrolls is extremely difficult and carries risks of destroying them.
The location of Plato's burial place was contained in thousands of new words and differently read words in papyrus on the history of the Academy by Philodemus of Gadara, an Epicurean philosopher and poet who lived in Herculaneum, said University of Pisa expert Graziano Ranocchia.
The scholar made the announcement at the Naples Biblioteca Nazionale (National Library) as he presented the mid-term results of the 'Greek Schools' research project conducted with the National Research Council.
Ranocchia said the texts suggested the burial place was in a garden reserved for Plato in a private area in the Academy, near the sacred shrine to the Muses.
The Platonic Academy was destroyed by the Roman dictator Sulla in 86 BC.

Hello,

Deepest blue hole in the world discovered, with hidden caves and tunnels believed to be inside
News By Sascha Pare 29 April 2024
Scientists have yet to reach the bottom of the Taam Ja' Blue Hole in Mexico's Chetumal Bay, which new measurements hint could be connected to a labyrinth of submarine caves and tunnels.
Mexico's Taam Ja' Blue Hole is the deepest known underwater sinkhole in the world, researchers have discovered — and they haven't even reached the bottom yet.
New measurements indicate the Taam Ja' Blue Hole (TJBH), which sits in Chetumal Bay off the southeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, extends at least 1,380 feet (420 meters) below sea level.
That's 480 feet (146 m) deeper than scientists initially documented when they first discovered the blue hole in 2021, and 390 feet (119 m) deeper than the previous record holder — the 990-foot-deep (301 m) Sansha Yongle Blue Hole, also known as the Dragon Hole, in the South China Sea.
"On December 6, 2023, a scuba diving expedition was conducted to identify the environmental conditions prevailing at the TJBH," researchers wrote in a study published Monday (April 29) in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science. During the expedition, the researchers took measurements with a conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) profiler — a device with a set of probes that read and transmit water properties to the surface in real time via a cable. The data revealed that the Taam Ja' blue hole is "the world's deepest known blue hole, with its bottom still not reached," the researchers wrote in the study.
The profiler also highlighted different layers of water within the blue hole, including a layer below 1,312 feet (400 m) where the temperature and salinity conditions resembled those of the Caribbean Sea and nearby coastal reef lagoons. This suggests the TJBH may be connected to the ocean via a hidden network of tunnels and caves, according to the study.
Blue holes are water-filled vertical caverns, or sinkholes, found in coastal regions where the bedrock is made of soluble material, such as limestone, marble or gypsum. They form when water on the surface percolates through the rock, dissolving minerals and widening cracks, which eventually causes the rock to collapse. Famous examples include Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas, the Dahab Blue Hole in Egypt and the Great Blue Hole in Belize.
Initial measurements of the TJBH were taken using an echo sounder — an instrument that sends sound waves down to the bottom of the water and measures the speed they come back to calculate distance. However, there are limitations to echo sounding techniques in blue holes due to fluctuations in water density and the unpredictable shape of each hole, which may not be perfectly vertical.
"Confirmation of the maximum depth was not possible due to instrument limitations during the scientific expeditions in 2021," the researchers wrote in the study.

Good morning, good morning,
Mainichi news Japan
Hibagon' hunters still pursuing apelike beast 50 years after sightings in Hiroshima Pref.
May 5, 2024 (Mainichi Japan)
HIROSHIMA (Kyodo) -- During the early 1970s there were multiple reported sightings of a frightening apelike creature that emerged from deep in the Chugoku Mountain range in western Japan, sparking angst among locals and even a police investigation.
As the story began to take hold, with dozens of sightings reported around Mt. Hiba in Hiroshima Prefecture, the beast eventually came to be known as "Hibagon."
More than five decades have passed since the first sightings, but believers from around Japan have continued to search in hopes of laying eyes on the mysterious creature.
According to the local Saijo Tourism Association, the Hibagon stands about 160 centimeters tall, has a hairy body and an inverted triangular face with a head twice the size of a human's.
From ancient times, Mt. Hiba has been a place of worship where myths abound related to Izanami-no-Mikoto, the goddess of birth and death in Japanese folklore.
It was here on the night of July 20, 1970, that a man in his 30s said he saw from his car an unusual two-legged creature walking down a mountain road in the Yuki district in the former town of Saijo, now incorporated into the city of Shobara, before it slowly retreated back up the trail after noticing it was being watched.
Eyewitnesses have described the unidentified figure as resembling a gorilla covered in dark brown bristles -- the Japanese equivalent of the North American Bigfoot or Himalayan Yeti.
Many people reported spotting the Hibagon over time, causing some residents to be wary of leaving their homes.
One man who was mowing grass near his home early in the morning of July 23, three days after the first sighting, claimed to have seen a creature in a grassy area with a "human face." Another man on July 30 called out to a person whom he believed was a relative walking along a footpath to a rice field, but it turned out to be a "gorilla-type monster."
News of the sightings caused a sensation that eventually drew the attention of police, local government and researchers.
The former reporter, then Shobara bureau chief of the Chugoku Shimbun, who wrote the article, was quoted in the Hiroshima-based daily as saying, "I didn't take the first call seriously because I thought it was just a hoax, but then I got another call from someone else who gave an eyewitness account."
After meeting separately with the three eyewitnesses to hear and compare their stories, the reporter said all appeared shaken up, with one saying, "I can't live here anymore." Another complained of people accusing him of "faking" the story and not believing him.
The Saijo town office later set up a consultation center to deal with residents concerned about the Hibagon sightings. In the end, there were 29 reported encounters.
By the mid-70s, talk about the Hibagon had died down, and the consultation center was closed in June 1975. These days, the Hibagon has become a symbol of the town, and signs with its imagined likeness are everywhere.
A plaster "footprint" purported to belong to the Hibagon was kept in the chief's office of the Shobara Police Station, which is part of the Hiroshima Prefectural Police.
In 2021, when the town's tourist association introduced the footprint in a video on its website, it became a hot topic of conversation, especially among Japan's cryptid enthusiasts.
The police department states that although there is a record of having collected it on Dec. 16, 1970, and storing it, nobody knows its provenance.
As well as the Hibagon, "Tsuchinoko" serpentine monsters are rumored to exist in Nara Prefecture and local tourism authorities in that region are attempting to cash in on visitors' curiosity.
Last year, the Shobara Police Department donated the "footprint" to the tourism association, which moved it to JR Bingo-Saijo Station. The tourist association used the donation as an opportunity to start recruitment for a "Hibagon Explorers" fan club that has seen about 40 people from around Japan join.
A tour of the mountain road where the first sightings supposedly took place is planned for May. Kazuo Yamaguchi, chairman of the tourist association, said, "The Hibagon is an important presence. We would like to promote it as our strength to appeal to the charms of the northern part of the prefecture."

Mornin' New York Post Video of aliens spotted in Vegas is totally ‘authentic,’ expert says: ‘You can’t deny it’ By Social Links forAlex Mitchell Published May 8, 2024, 5:57 p.m. ET It’s out of this world. A viral video of an alleged alien encounter outside a Las Vegas home from 2023 is not doctored, experts say. “Once you see it, you can’t deny it,” evidence examiner Scott Roder told News Nation. Police footage initially captured the incident from a year ago. 8 News NOW Las Vegas “There’s no editing. That is an original video. We tried to debunk it to see if there was something that was added to the video. All of our results came back as it was authentic,” he said. The clip in question was taken overnight between April 30 and May 1 last year by teenager Angel Kenmore, previously identified as Angel Gomez by some media outlets. Kenmore called 911 around 11:50pm — roughly the same time a Las Vegas police officer reported a fleeting object in the sky. The American Meteor Society said the UFO’s flash was seen as far as California and Utah. When Kenmore and his family went to investigate, a video they had taken caught unexplained motion above a fencepost in the right of the frame. The movement caused the family to flee in terror. Although not visible on camera, he described it in a YouTube video as “a tall, skinny, lengthy creature” with a “grey greenish color.” After deeply reviewing the footage — shot roughly 80 miles from Area 51 — Roder became convinced this was not a hoax or “a floating head.” “We believe it’s attached to a body. And the motion of that head from right to left is consistent with the motion that we see between the slats of the fence,” he said. “It’s there. It’s absolutely there.” Expert Ben Hansen, who hosts “UFO Witness” on Discovery+, suggested that the movement was caused by a flashlight’s reflection. Experts say the incident was not a hoax. But Roder isn’t convinced. “I don’t understand how the shadow could just be floating above the fence. I don’t believe that makes any sense.” Adding to the phenomena, the transcript of Kenmore’s call to police, where he described seeing two extraterrestrial beings, was chilling. “In my backyard. I swear to God this is not a joke, this is actually — we’re terrified,” the young man said. “They’re very large. They’re like 8 foot, 9 feet, 10 foot. They look like aliens to us. Big eyes. They have big eyes. Like, I can’t explain it. And big mouth. They’re shiny eyes and they’re not human. They’re 100% not human,” he claimed. Police were also frightened by the occurrence. Even responding officers were completely spooked. “I’m so nervous right now,” an officer was recorded saying. “I have butterflies, bro — saw a shooting star and now these people say there’s aliens in their backyard.” “I’m not going to BS, you guys. One of my partners said they saw something fall out of the sky, too,” he added. Police installed cameras at the Kenmore residence after the incident and say they found no evidence of the event being phony or staged. nypost.com/2024/05/08/lifestyle/video-of-aliens-spotted-in-vegas-is-authentic-expert/Crystal
