MUFON Case # 93981 Date Submitted Date/Time of Event Location of Event
2018-08-09 2018-07-17|11:27PM Elephant Butte, NM, US
Description
We were taking night photos of the stars with a 50mm lens on a Canon EOS Rebel T2i by laying the camera lens up and setting it to take long exposure shots. In one photo of a series of photos we caught a small unknown image. The stars all show up as single dots, but there is one very bright light with a tail that has several course changes in a very short period. We did not view with our eyes, we discovered the image after we looked at the photo the next morning. We hope someone may have an explanation of what this is.

... setting it to take long exposure shots...
As the stars in the picture show no sign of elongation you can't have been taking very long exposures.
Unless, of course, you had the camera on a star tracking set up to allow for the Earth's rotation.
Nice star field picture though. How long did you set the exposure for.
HAL.

As the star with the 'tail' is the brightest star in the shot it is the first one the camera will see and register on the long exposure, the millisecond the camera starts to record the exposure.... The tail is the movement of the camera due to either the mirror moving or your finger leaving the button you pressed to start the exposure....even the second brightest star shows movement .... The rest are nice and sharp as no movement of the camera registers for the rest of the exposure .... As there is no real trailing evident and I guess from your description you weren't trackng I would say 20 second exposure ?? I have hundreds of these type of shots I could show you, I'm afraid all it shows is the movement of the camera the split second it starts to record the shot. to help combat this lock the mirror up if your camera allows and use a remote shutter control so you don't have to touch the camera at all when starting an exposure.

Guys, I live in a Florida swamp. I did not take this New Mexico picture. I was just passing on a MUFON report. I have no idea what settings were used on this particular picture.
