.. Could it be he might just as well use his radio inflight (as he obviously was doing!) to contact the folks handling the lights..
The other end of his radio conversation would have been King Island airfield, which was closed. Had it been open then King Island would have also been party to his conversation about the alleged ufo. There is no record of this happening.

Hi HAL, I am just speculating, maybe I should read some more on the communication aspect of this case, however: we never know who is listening on the other end of a radio conversation, depends on who's on the same (set of) frequencies, that's why I suggested him possibly contacting "the folks" handling the lights, expecting some of them to own radios too, with Valentich in the know on what frequency to hail them. Again he may have fallen silent due to his sudden disappearance.
