The record producer and Beats co-founder was speaking to NME on the red carpet of the premiere of Netflix’s new original series The Defiant Ones – which tells the story of the rise and success of Dr Dre and Iovine in their early days through to meeting and building an empire together.
Asked if he felt any names in modern hip-hop were carrying on the legacy of the likes of Dre and NWA, Iovine replied: “I don’t know. I’m always looking for the lyricist and to see where the anarchy is coming from – words about social injustice you know. I don’t see anything like that right now."
“There’s a white guy and a black guy from two rough, racially-challenged neighbourhoods, they stuck together through very difficult times and built a great business. We just don’t stop, and that’s what it really takes to get somewhere.”
“[Dr Dre] knows what he wants, he doesn’t compromise, and he’s not for rent”
Quincy is right..It's disturbing their hasn't been any really good music.in the last 20 years or so..actually its been suppressed by the the large corps..like Sony..Our only hope is the independents like Trinaissance"
I ALWAYS THOUGHT ZAPPA NAILED IT WHEN DESCRIBING THE MUSIC SCENE...THE SIXTIES/SEVENTIES YOU HAD THOSE CIGAR SMOKING ITALIANS/JEWS WILLING TO TAKE A RISK ON SUMPTIN NEW...AND THOSE WHOM SERVED THEM COFFEE AND WORKED THEIR WAY INTO THE SAME POSITION TO THOSE THEY SERVED COFFEE TO...LACKED THE RISK/RETURN GUT INSTINCT TO ROLL THE DICE. NOBODY KNOWS WHAT WILL BE HOT AND WHAT WILL NOT. MUCH OF MUSIC TODAY IS LIKE A GROCERY STORE AND DATA ON SALES (CORPORATE COOKIE CUTTER MUSIC)... THEY REORDER WHAT HAS SOLD AND THIN THE SHELVES OF WHAT HAS NOT...THUS THE INEVITABLE TUNNEL VISION RAISES IT'S HEAD...TRINAISSANCE RECOGNISED THIS APSECT...AND LIKE ALL THE COWBOYS IN THE INDIE MUSIC SCENE...WE PUSH THE BOUNDARIES!!!
DID I SAY A NEW TRACK IS ALMOST OUT OF THE OVEN ~ HOOKS INCLUDED ;D
