What is going on cannot be stated any simpler than the above title, but it is complicated to the extreme. I shall be making a shallow attempt here from my limited perspective.
I remember--I'm that old—in the 1950s when the "flying saucers" politely landed at first in fields, on roads and even railroad tracks. That was the second level of their attention-getting approach after initially, simply zipping around overhead for to get our attention. Next, we were granted sightings of small, obviously harmless beings. The LGM (Little Green Men), as they were called in those days, were sighted many times diligently collecting plants around their landed craft or seemingly doing maintenance work on it. (You could suppose a very intentional, non-threatening Earth Botany 101field trip done for show and/or an equally harmless and intentional broken-fan-belt-type of incident. Possibly at that early stage, they were not yet into understanding human humor and irony.)
Eventually, things took a more serious note as livestock mutilations and human abductions became quite frequent and upsetting but were mostly ignored by the general public, the media and the government. The mutilations can be the next-level step to understanding flesh and blood physiology. The abductions were to understand the mental makeup of humans. (Let’s call that the Human Psych 101 phase.Brainwashing is only part of the procedures done on the innocent victims. -This phase of ETI's activities probably will be scrubbed from any officially approved UFO history as it would disclose the inhuman changes and manipulations done to thousands and thousands of unsuspecting, of the captured-and-rleased abductees. But if our human leaders need scare the populace into later submissions to their dictates, perhaps we shall be told of some of the less sinister examples.
From abductee accounts, it seems that they were interested in-depth investigations and manipulations of our human nature, philosophies of life and related systems including our world politics. Our tinkering with the atom may have fueled their interests in our virtues.
Once confident that they know us from start to finish, literally, and with immense AI powers, what would the ETIs do with that image of humanity? Being vastly superior, would they create and mandate a crash course for a complete makeover of our bungling, self-made sphere? They did not directly terminate us, so what would be the solution? Would they make us an offer that we could not refuse? Would they take the liberty of adjusting the core of our humanity to what they have deemed suitable for our continued existence? Can we be cognizant of such social engineering being applied and to what extent?
