And what about newspapers, US Mail, oranges and apples or face masks? Things that are touched by other people and which we all use or need.
"The ability to disinfect and reuse disposable N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) may be needed during a pandemic of an infectious respiratory disease such as influenza. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is one possible method for respirator disinfection."
I envision a medium size cardboard box with a lid. Inside one wires a mains powered 'Edison' lamp socket out to a power-switch taped or glued to the exterior of the box. In-line with that wiring one places a micro-switch so that switch lever must be pushed down by the box lid so that the lamp can not be powered unless the lid is placed on the box covering the contents.
The lamp is a UV-C disinfectant bulb available from eBay and Amazon, see:
www.amazon.com/uv-c-lamp/s?k=uv-c+lamp
Homebrew versions: Amazon 254nm Lamp Item Nr: B01EI3FD56 <== put that into the Amazon search field, press <cr> or Item Nr: B085C6XWMP
With the remaining eye, one SHALL NOT stare directly at the bulb and you SHALL NOT put your hands in it, is not a good thing to swath one's hands, fingers, arms...anything with flesh in the radiant energy of the bulb either. Afterall, it is intended to disrupt biological structures.
If you build this and then blind yourself or others, or electrocute yourself or burn-down your house, remember you built it, not me and therefore you are responsible. If you are not qualified to build it, ask someone who is. Or buy a manufactured unit.
