I refer to the 'S' in 'HTTPS'.
A problem I am having is having to come back to this machine because my other machines will not let me access this site as it is only HTTP. And many browsers see here as insecure.

Good question..that would safeguard their own security certificate(s) . Some very ruthless chaps out there to be playing fast and loose with that.

Just had a look at the address for this site.
It is HTTPS.
I wonder why my Linux machine doesn't see this ?
HAL.
Hazarding a guess that it is the Freeforums.net that is insecure; not the rest.

Additional.
The proboards site is secure (https://login.proboards.com/login/6925961/1) but Casebook isn't.

My wifi router is out now..I reported the prior disconnects here..this is odd as Luvey had left for the same reason: Router blown away..I have to make do Tethering my phone as a wifi hotspot to my pc until new router arrives..this could all be coincidence and just the fickled nature of technology..still very annoying..

I really don't know anything about these protocols except the 'S' means secure (via encryption) in HTTPS. In this age of grade school hackers busting into military computers is the encryption in HTTPS really secure?

Lacking the 'S' certainly stops one visiting some sites with some browsers.
By the way, did Godel even define 'a priori truth' ?

Yet my security software, which will proactively block any actively dangerous site, never deemed UFO Casebook unsafe or reported a cyber attack. So I feel fairly safe on here. That said, any website, ours included, can be hacked, at one time or another has been 'hacked', be it in disruptive or discrete ways, so I post everything here as if the world, government agencies, any number of bad (and a handful of good) actors is reading, listening and watching over my shoulder. purr

Purr,
The problem, at least to me, is that I can come here with no problems from this machine running an old version of Firefox. But if I try to use Avast Secure Browser It won't let me in.
Also if I change to my Linux machine, currently running Puppy Precise 5.7.1, The same thing happens. Precise uses Google. Presumably a version of Chrome, as it's search engine. This wont let me use Duckduckgo either.
I need to change the browser.

There is nothing quite like that feeling...safe..secure...soothed..cuddled even...

Not a new member problem, but I didn't wish to start a new thread.
I have noticed recently that, unlike before, when I click on a thread with a 'new' tag in front of it, the tag does not go away when I have read the thread and moved on to another one. What has happened ?

Don't worry Hal ..I'm sick of this S anyway..but don't let this S bother you..The S is about to hit the fan any day now..isn't avast the one collecting data ..every single click..even if you used a VP... and selling it..? I'd change your AV protection if I were you..Stop using that S! AND AS EXTRAORDINARY CLAIMS REQUIRE EXTRAORDINARY PROOF..

I think that it is accepted that total security is impossible. And that this won't change.
A VPN comes in useful if you're needing to circumvent a countries rules on what they show outside their boundaries. If I'm blocked from an American site I can just set my proxy server for America. And I get it.
