Gullivers Travels incorporated Native American Tales of Sasquatch!
Australian National University researcher Debbie Argue may have solved one of English literature’s most enduring mysteries: Jonathan Swift’s inspiration for the Yahoo characters in his famous novel Gulliver’s Travels. In a paper Dr. Argue published in the Relict Hominoid Inquiry she suggests that Swift based the Yahoo on a creature called sasquatch that is derived from the ethnography of North American indigenous peoples. Gulliver’s Travels is a political and social satire by Jonathan Swift, published in 1726. Part IV of this fictional work is an account of Lemuel Gulliver’s voyage to the country of the Houyhnhms, in which he discovers two animal populations. One comprises horses, the articulate Houyhnhms, and the other is a subservient humanoid group called Yahoos. “Swift gave quite a detailed description of what the Yahoos looked like, how they acted and what they ate,” said Dr. Argue, a visiting fellow in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology at the Australian National University. “As I read about the Native American descriptions of the sasquatch I noticed they had similar descriptions.” “Both represent a large, hairy, tailless, strong and agile humanoid form with tough skin; both have an offensive odor and are variously described as an ugly monster,” she said. “Hands and feet have sharp claws or nails and the skin on their palms is coarse; females have pendulous breasts; both males and females may have beards.” “Neither has capacity for speech but they vocalize by chattering, howling, grinning, roaring (the sasquatch is said to yell, whinny, scream, gibber and chatter, and make a sound like a crying child).” “They both eat herbs, roots, berries, carrion, fish, and a wild rat-like animal.” England had a lot of involvement with Native American Indians in the early 1700s, and it’s conceivable that Swift could have been inspired by their stories. The book makes reference to three specific dates, two of which are known to correspond with significant events in Swift’s own life, but the relevance of the third has remained a mystery. “I think the date relates to the visit of the four Native American ‘Kings’ who arrived for a visit to England on 10 April in 1710,” Dr. Argue said. “The ‘Kings’ were actually four Native American leaders who visited for diplomatic reasons.” “They were received in London by Queen Anne at the Court of St. James Palace, hosted by the nobility, and transported around the city in Royal carriages.” “I think Swift used the date of the ‘Kings’ arrival after he heard about their beliefs in these beings. These mystical beings became the model for the Yahoos.” Dr. Argue said the theory was given further weight when you look at the placement of the date within the book. “Swift uses this date for the arrival of Gulliver back in London following a voyage, and he places this date within three sentences of introducing us to the Yahoos,” she added. _____ Debbie Argue. 2018. www.foxnews.com/us/tennessee-police-drugs-meth-gators-toiletTennessee police warn not to flush drugs down toilet for fear of creating 'meth-gators'Word to the wise: don't flush your meth down the toilet. That's the warning coming out of the Loretta Police Department in Tennessee after investigators said they caught someone "attempting to flush methamphetamine along with several items of paraphernalia" on Saturday. DRUG DEALERS IN NORTH CAROLINA CAN NOW BE CHARGED WITH MURDER IF SOMEONE OVERDOSES The department advised against disposing of drugs, including pills, via the sewage because "when you send something down the sewer pipe it ends up in our retention ponds for processing before it is sent down stream." "Our sewer guys take great pride in releasing water that is cleaner than what is in the creek," police said, "but they are not really prepared for meth." Authorities said that waterfowl, including geese and ducks, end up in that water -- and they "shudder to think what one all hyped up on meth would do." But in addition to birds, officials said if the water headed far enough downstream... "it would create meth-gators in Shoal Creek and the Tennessee River down in North Alabama." "They’ve had enough methed up animals the past few weeks without our help. So, if you need to dispose of your drugs just give us a call and we will make sure they are disposed of in the proper way."

Red wine's resveratrol could help Mars explorers stay strong
Mars is about 9 months from Earth with today's tech, NASA reckons. As the new space race hurtles forward, Harvard researchers are asking: how do we make sure the winners can still stand when they reach the finish line?
Published in Frontiers in Physiology, their study shows that resveratrol substantially preserves muscle mass and strength in rats exposed to the wasting effects of simulated Mars gravity.
Space supplements
Out in space, unchallenged by gravity, muscles and bones weaken. Weight-bearing muscles are hit first and worst, like the soleus muscle in the calf.
"After just 3 weeks in space, the human soleus muscle shrinks by a third," says Dr. Marie Mortreux, lead author of the NASA-funded study at the laboratory of Dr. Seward Rutkove, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. "This is accompanied by a loss of slow-twitch muscle fibers, which are needed for endurance."
To allow astronauts to operate safely on long missions to Mars—whose gravitational pull is just 40% of Earth's—mitigating strategies will be needed to prevent muscle deconditioning.
"Dietary strategies could be key," says Dr. Mortreux, "especially since astronauts travelling to Mars won't have access to the type of exercise machines deployed on the ISS."
A strong candidate is resveratrol: a compound commonly found in grape skin and blueberries that has been widely investigated for its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-diabetic effects.
"Resveratrol has been shown to preserve bone and muscle mass in rats during complete unloading, analogous to microgravity during spaceflight. So, we hypothesized that a moderate daily dose would help mitigate muscle deconditioning in a Mars gravity analogue, too."
Mars rats
To mimic Mars gravity, the researchers used an approach first developed in mice by Mary Bouxsein, Ph.D., also at Beth Israel Deaconess, in which rats were fitted with a full-body harness and suspended by a chain from their cage ceiling.
Thus, 24 male rats were exposed to normal loading (Earth) or 40% loading (Mars) for 14 days. In each group, half received resveratrol (150 mg/kg/day) in water; the others got just the water. Otherwise, they fed freely from the same chow.
Calf circumference and front and rear paw grip force were measured weekly, and at 14 days the calf muscles were analyzed.
Resveratrol to the rescue
The results were impressive.
As expected, the 'Mars' condition weakened the rats' grip and shrank their calf circumference, muscle weight and slow-twitch fiber content.
But incredibly, resveratrol supplementation almost entirely rescued front and rear paw grip in the Mars rats, to the level of the non-supplemented Earth rats.
What's more, resveratrol completely protected muscle mass (soleus and gastrocnemius) in the Mars rats, and in particular reduced the loss of slow-twitch muscle fibers. The protection was not complete, though: the supplement did not entirely rescue average soleus and gastrocnemius fibers cross-sectional area, or calf circumference.
As reported previously, resveratrol did not affect food intake or total body weight.
Perfecting the dose
Previous resveratrol research can explain these findings, says Dr. Mortreux.
"A likely factor here is insulin sensitivity.
"Resveratrol treatment promotes muscle growth in diabetic or unloaded animals, by increasing insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in the muscle fibers. This is relevant for astronauts, who are known to develop reduced insulin sensitivity during spaceflight."
The anti-inflammatory effects of resveratrol could also help to conserve muscle and bone, and other anti-oxidant sources such as dried plums are being used to test this, adds Dr. Mortreux.
"Further studies are needed to explore the mechanisms involved, as well as the effects of different doses of resveratrol (up to 700 mg/kg/day) in both males and females. In addition, it will be important to confirm the lack of any potentially harmful interactions of resveratrol with other drugs administered to astronauts during space missions."

Things have gotten so bad in Congress that a priest prayed to 'cast out all spirits of darkness' on the House floor www.businessinsider.com/house-chaplain-cast-out-all-spirits-of-darkness-out-congress-2019-7
WASHINGTON — It has been quite the week in Congress, with lawmakers battling over a forced impeachment resolution against President Donald Trump, partisan squabbling, and rampant infighting within the House Democratic Caucus.
Things have become so vexed in the Capitol that Rev. Patrick Conroy, the House of Representatives' official chaplain and a Jesuit priest, prayed to "cast out all spirits of darkness" on the House floor Thursday morning during his opening prayer.
"This has been a difficult and contentious week in which darker spirits seem to have been at play in the people's House," Conroy said. "In your most holy name, I now cast out all spirits of darkness from this chamber. Spirits not from You."

'Bright Blue Ball Of Light': UFO Reported In Farmingville
On Wednesday, the nonprofit Mutual UFO Network received a report that someone saw an unidentifiable flying object shaped like a bullet.
By Gus Saltonstall, Patch Staff Jul 18, 2019 10:08 am ET
FARMINGVILLE, NY — UFOs and the possibility that aliens from another galaxy send emissaries to check things out on Earth have captivated Americans for decades, and Farmingville is apparently no exception.
On Wednesday, the nonprofit Mutual UFO Network received a report that someone saw an unidentifiable flying object shaped like a bullet July 1. The person, who was not identified, was looking into the stars at what they believed was Mars while getting Italian ices with friends and kids.
Suddenly something appeared in the sky.
"A bright brilliant baby blue colored ball appeared to be coming from right near the mars star, hovering for a second or then then it headed west across the horizon," read the description of the report. "It was bright and created a long tail as it move, the tail was the same brightness and color as the circular object and it was moving fast across the horizon way."
The object disappeared in the night sky almost as quickly as it appeared. The person was startled by what they saw.
"The 3 of us saw it and immediately knew it was something weird," the report said. "I've seen shooting stars, planes, and all means of aircraft including all types of handheld flying toys...this was something completely unique to itself. I can still picture it perfectly."
The latest UFO sighting comes after Navy pilots recently spoke of seeing mysterious objects — with no discernible engine or exhaust fumes — flying at hypersonic speeds. President Donald Trump recently said he was briefed on UFOs, and a group of Senate lawmakers received a classified briefing last month about such objects.
The Navy has drafted guidelines to allow pilots to report UFOs and so that the military can track them. As Patch previously reported, the military branch prefers not to use the term "UFO."
"We don't actually use that term," Joseph Gradisher, a spokesman for the deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, told Patch last month. "We use 'Unmanned Aerial System.'"

Gorgeous, Freaky Sunset Photo Looks Split Down the Middle
By Mindy Weisberger July 18, 2019 11:37am ET
The spectacular colors of this sunset cover only half the sky. A large, distant cloud below the horizon shadows the other half. Credit: Photo courtesy of Uma Gopalakrishnan
A recent sunset photo stunned viewers on social media. An unusual optical effect made the sunset resemble a split-screen image showing two very different skies side by side.
On the photo's right side is a horizon saturated with hues of red and yellow. But on the left side, the sky is darker and drabber. Uma Gopalakrishnan captured the photo in Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 13 at 8:55 p.m. local time, sharing the unaltered pictures and video on Instagram and Twitter.
Though it looks unnatural, the so-called split sunset wasn't created with filters or Photoshop. Rather, it was caused by the shadow of a large cloud below the horizon that prevented sunlight from striking the clouds that were closer to viewers on the ground.
"I had never seen something like this before. And I couldn't believe it when I did see it that night!" Gopalakrishnan told Live Science in an email.
Sunsets and sunrises produce spectacular colors because, with the sun sitting low on the horizon, the light has to travel farther through Earth's atmosphere (compared with other times of the day) before we see it, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Because of this long journey, more of the blue light in the electromagnetic spectrum gets scattered, so the light that reaches our eyes appears reddish, NOAA explains.
And if the setting sun's light has to travel through particles in the air, such as volcanic ash or pollution, blue light gets scattered even more, and red hues become more vivid.
But what caused this weird "split-screen" effect? When a large cloud lies between the sun and clouds that are closer to the ground, the big cloud casts a shadow. This blocks direct sunlight and keeps it from striking the other clouds, creating what looks like a vertical barrier dividing two different skies, according to Universities Space Research Association.
When the remarkable sunset emerged, Gopalakrishnan was at home, scrolling through Instagram and looking at stories about another awe-inspiring cosmic phenomenon: Manhattanhenge. (During this twice-annual event in New York City, the setting sun touches down at the horizon while staying perfectly aligned in the center of streets running from east to west.)
From her seat on the couch, before she took her photos, Gopalakrishnan saw what looked like a normal sunset. But when she leaned back, she noticed that only half of the sky was illuminated.
"That's when I got up, went to my balcony and captured those photographs and videos. I was completely awestruck," she said.
Science writer Joe Hanson tweeted a visual explanation for the phenomenon on July 16, using emojis. His diagram traces layers of clouds, showing how a large cloud can partially block the sun and cast a shadow on clouds closer to viewers.
The "split sunset" is even more intense in a second photo that Gopalakrishnan took a few minutes later in the evening; in this shot, the left half of the sky has darkened to a deep purple, while vibrant sunset colors glow on the right.

New study uncovers China's massive hidden lending to poor countries New report shows the extent of China's hidden power as the developing world's creditor.
Mike Colagrossi
18 July, 2019
• Over 50 developing countries' Chinese debt accounts for on average 15 percent of their individual GDP.
• New report shows that the majority of the world's developing country's debt to China is considered "hidden."
• China's loans for poor countries are primarily for crucial infrastructure.
China's overseas lending, which was virtually zero before the turn of the century — well, about $500 billion in 2000 — stands today, ostensibly, at around $5 trillion. Indeed, they are now the world's largest creditor, being twice as large as both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, combined.
As much of what China does is under a veiled curtain of secrecy, it's been difficult to track how all the money is flowing. A new comprehensive study though, by Sebastian Horn and Christoph Trebesch of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, and Carmen Reinhart of Harvard University, has provided some new insights about China's official credit lending empire. What did the researchers discover? More than half of China's lending to developing countries is what they term "hidden" money — loans that haven't been reported to any of the international funds, such as the World Bank.
Indeed, economist and author of the report, Tresbesch, recently told Germany's Spiegel in an interview following the release of the study's findings, that compiling all of the information was like "a kind of economic archeology." Their information came from numerous financial world databases, along with some documents provided courtesy of the CIA.
It's no secret that China would like to keep this type of information occluded from the international scene. Opponents of China's secretive lending practices fear that Beijing is engaging in predatory debt diplomacy and using their worldwide Belt and Road Initiative to create a new kind of economic colonialism over Africa and other parts of the developing world.
China’s creditor strategy for economic growth
Watch video: www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=TeGKEiODCjA
China is in a state of further economic evolution. Long gone are the days of being the world's impoverished manufacturer. With a thriving consumer market boosted at home, China is now flexing their influence over vast swathes of the world. One of their strategies is by becoming the world's most involved lender to poor countries.
This can be problematic for a number of reasons. Countries that take this deal, end up grossly indebting themselves to China's policies in a number of ways, both monetarily and culturally. An example on the extreme end of the spectrum is Djibouti, whose Chinese debt is equivalent to 70 percent of the country's GDP. On average, the top 50 of China's borrowers owe somewhere near 15 percent of their GDPs, which, still, on a global scale is quite a lot.
The authors also found that China has never officially disclosed any loans to Iran, Venezuela, or Zimbabwe, which on other records it's been shown that China is a major creditor. The report speculates that one of the ways to avoid these international cross-border crediting claims, is by the Chinese government disbursing loans straight to Chinese contractors rather than the developing governments themselves.
A great deal of these loans aren't subject to credit rating agencies, because most of China's foreign loans flow straight from their government. China's lending practices take on another interesting dynamic, as the country is lending much more than just money: it is also helping build crucial infrastructure in these developing nations. In doing so, China exports a healthy dose of its culture and influence.
Growing influence in Africa
China's investment in Africa takes the form of loans in exchange for infrastructure development. Oftentimes, Chinese companies and citizens reap the benefits and profits of these large projects. While many Africans welcome the much needed investment into their countries, it's not clear how much the continent is benefiting from this Chinese influence.
One major issue a lot of countries are facing is that almost the entirety of their country's debt load comes from China. For example, of Kenya's $50 billion in debt, more than 72 percent of it is from China. In Senegal, highways, industrial parks and other crucial developmental projects for a functioning country are all funded by large, risky Chinese loans. Again, much of this value goes back to China. They're not doing this for humanitarian reasons. The Chinese expect a capital and cultural return.
Tim Wegenast, who wrote a report about Chinese mining in Africa states:
"It's more or less safe to say that Chinese companies employ less local labor than other companies because they bring over many Chinese workers, and when they develop local infrastructure, they provide countries with loans which are being used to pay for it, which is then constructed by Chinese companies and Chinese labor."
A future of Chinese credit
According to The Economist, China's lending prowess is more of a mixed bag. While many new loans from China were offloaded with debt relief by Western creditors after defaulting, China has in the past put forth some debt restructuring plans on 140 of their foreign loans. Although at other times, they've taken their collateral with ruthless abandon, for example when they seized the Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka.
Many Chinese loans have higher extended interest rates and short maturities, with heavy collateral that includes commodities, or even important strategic foreign infrastructure.
The authors of the report note that China has started talking about being more transparent and sustainable on their loans in the future. But no clear evidence of this taking place has yet to materialize.

A British woman has been awarded for designing a chair that prevents “manspreading” by forcing men to sit as if they don’t have any balls.I’m not even joking. “Manspreading,” otherwise known as ‘having a pair of testicles’ – is where men sit with their legs spread apart on public transport. 23-year-old Laila Laurel says she designed the chair “following her own experiences of ‘manspreading'”. “It came both from my own experiences of men infringing on my space in public, and also from ‘The Everyday Sexism Project’, a website founded by Laura Bates in which women self-testify about sexism they experience,” she told LadBible. “With my chair set I hoped to draw awareness to the act of sitting for men and women and inspire discussion around this,” added Laurel, who was given the Belmond Award for emerging talent (whatever that is). But here’s the kicker; Laurel has also designed a chair which encourages women to engage in the very same behavior she complains about the men doing. If you’re wondering if that makes any sense whatsoever then stop because it doesn’t. Also, from an aesthetic viewpoint, the designs look absolutely hideous.
